Additions, clarifications, extended definition
Unlike the "number of mentions" (which may also include brief notices or citations in databases), this metric tracks the entire published item, typically at the level of an article, a broadcast report, or a standalone post.
Interpretation
A higher number of items means the brand gained more visibility with the media. The metric shows the quantity of coverage, not its quality or influence.
Watch out: limits and risks of distortion
- It says nothing about sentiment or content – items may be negative, or may contain only a brief mention of the brand in question.
- Media carry different weight: a full-page article in a key outlet has a different impact than a brief mention in a title at the lower end of the influence scale.
- Possible duplicates – some monitoring services capture the same story multiple times, e.g. across regional editions of daily newspapers.
Where and how to measure
- Media monitoring (Newton Media, Mediaboard, Meltwater).
- Manual tracking of selected media for smaller campaigns, possibly supplemented with Google News.
Context
This metric is among the most frequently reported because it is easy to measure. On its own, however, it is not enough – it needs to be complemented with qualitative indicators (sentiment, relevance, key message pull-through).
Example from practice
A non-profit organisation launched an awareness campaign. Monitoring captured 45 media items in a single month (25 online articles, 15 print pieces, 5 TV reports). The number looked positive, but detailed analysis showed that the key message appeared in only half of them.
