Additions, clarifications, extended definition
Outbound clicks represent the most precise way of measuring traffic from social media content, as they include only those clicks that actually took the user out of the platform's ecosystem. Some networks (e.g. Meta) distinguish between "link clicks" (clicks on any link, including internal destinations) and "outbound clicks" (only clicks leading outside). This is why the metric is considered a reliable indicator of genuinely driving visitors to external websites and is often the main indicator of success for acquisition campaigns.
Interpretation
This is the acquisition metric with the highest informative value within the clicks family. It shows how many users were persuaded to leave the platform and continue directly to the brand's website or another digital channel. Outbound clicks thus make it possible to measure precisely the contribution of social media to traffic generation.
Watch out: limits and risks of distortion
- Not all platforms offer outbound clicks as a standalone metric.
- Not every outbound click equals a quality visitor. Some users may leave the page immediately (bounce), thereby increasing the bounce rate.
- If links are not correctly tagged with UTM parameters, downstream measurement in Google Analytics may be inaccurate.
- A significant difference from link clicks. Link clicks may also include clicks on internal destinations (e.g. opening an image, Meta's Instant Experience), whereas outbound clicks always mean an actual exit from the platform.
Where and how to measure
- Native analytics (Meta Ads Manager, LinkedIn Analytics, TikTok Analytics, etc.).
- Additionally via web analytics tools, e.g. GA4, for more precise measurement.
Formulas
outbound CTR (outbound click-through rate) = (number of outbound clicks / number of impressions) × 100
share of outbound clicks in link clicks = (number of outbound clicks / number of link clicks) × 100
Example from practice
An Instagram campaign achieved 80,000 impressions and delivered 1,600 link clicks. Analysis, however, showed that there were only 900 actual outbound clicks. This made it possible to establish precisely that only a portion of users actually reached the brand's website, which was key for measuring the campaign's acquisition value.
